2006 gmc envoy review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Stabilitrak furthers appeal of this versatile suv. introductionthe gmc envoy features a broad lineup of versatile, sophisticated, and highly capable suvs. About a dozen different variants are available, including the luxurious denali.  the standard envoy is a five-passenger suv with two rows of comfortable seats. The sle and slt models are compelling alternatives to the ford explorer and other mid-size suvs. Stable and responsive with excellent road manners, the envoy comes with a smooth, powerful inline six-cylinder engine that has been updated for 2006.  the envoy denali is equipped with a more powerful v8 engine that improves its performance and increases its cargo-hauling and trailer-towing capability. This optional 5. 3-liter v8 features gm's displacement on demand technology, which idles half the cylinders when cruising to enhance fuel economy. Denali is also upgraded with luxury features and special trim, including 18-inch aluminum wheels for 2006.  the extra-long envoy xl models are considerably longer, allowing seven-passenger seating and greater hauling versatility. Because it's longer and heavier, the xl doesn't handle as well as the envoy nor does it feel as reassuring as the wider gmc yukon. In short, we much prefer the envoy and yukon over the envoy xl, though the latter does represent a value proposition.  safety gets a major addition for 2006, as all envoys come equipped with gm's stabilitrak electronic stability control with proactive roll avoidance. This system uses selective wheel braking and compensating shock absorber adjustments to help maintain vehicle control on slick and uneven road surfaces, as well as during emergency lane changes or avoidance maneuvers. Envoy and envoy xl models come with the six-cylinder vortec 4200 engine. Denali models are equipped with the 5. 3-liter v8. Navigation 1,995) and a bose premium sound system 495) are available for slt models, along with an mp3 player. Discount packages bundle the sunroof with various audio and entertainment options. The 2wd models can be ordered with a locking rear differential 270) and traction control 175).  safety features include anti-lock brakes (abs) as standard equipment on all models. Head-curtain and side-impact airbags are optional 495). walkaroundthe gmc envoy and envoy denali models are mid-size suvs, with a 113-inch wheelbase and overall length of 191. 6 inches, about the same size as a ford explorer. Envoy is smaller than a gmc yukon, but bigger than suvs built on car chassis.  the xl models have been stretched 16 inches, increasing the wheelbase to 129 inches. This provides space for third-row seating. One way to distinguish an envoy xl from the standard envoy is to look at the rear doors. The envoy's rear fenders overlap the rear door edges; the envoy xl, with its length stretched amidships, has enough space for the rear edge of the rear doors to drop straight down all the way to the rocker panels. Each of these nameplates boasts unique styling, but there are feature differences as well. It looks like it's ready to tackle the tough jobs (and it is), but the styling is conservative and upscale. It looks more sophisticated than the trailblazer. Envoy's giant black grille with its big ruby-red logo says gmc in no uncertain terms.  the front end, with its distinct headlamps, round fog lights and pouty front bumper with a wide, slim slit at the bottom is clean and sleek. Strong beveled shapes extend along the sides and around the wheel wells, and help make the envoy look imposing. It doesn't have the trailblazer's showy fender flares, instead housing its big 17-inch wheels inside hefty wheel openings that are part of its trapezoidal design theme. The rear bumper is stepped for its full length, and includes big round backup lights. Running boards, which also serve as stone guards, are integrated into the rocker panels.  while the standard envoy is a handsome vehicle, the proportion of the xl models make them look ungainly. They look too long in the back relative to their front proportions. interiorthe gmc envoy and envoy denali seat five passengers. The xl versions add a third row to seat seven. The front and middle rows of the standard models are the same as in the xl models.  the gmc's seats seemed more comfortable than those in the chevy. The envoy's seat cushions are longer, wider and thicker, and offer noticeably more side bolstering, though the seat bottoms could use more support.  the leather upholstery in the envoy slt is plush, but the cloth in the sle grips the driver better. Head, hip and legroom are comparable to that of the ford explorer. As with explorer, the sides of the seat bottoms are not fully trimmed around to the inside. On the slt, the driver's bucket is eight-way power adjustable, with two-way lumbar support and optional heat. The shoulder belts are fixed to the seatbacks; we'd prefer adjustable-height anchors.  the brushed nickel interior trim looks classy. The slt gets burl woodgrain trim on the center stack and console. Wood is also used around the light switches and the switches on the door armrests. Overall, the dash looks a bit choppy, not smooth and organic. Instrumentation is complete and clean, however. A big tachometer is on the left, speedometer in the center, and on the right are smaller gauges for water, battery, gas and oil.  sle's manual climate controls use sliders, which seem like a throwback in technology, while the slt's excellent digital controls use round knobs. Turning a knob is easier than sliding a lever, especially when bouncing around on rough roads. Both systems feature dual zones so temperature can be controlled separately by driver and front passenger. In xl models, rear-seat passengers get their own temperature control, which can be controlled by the driver, an important feature for dogs as well as people on hot summer days.  the center console features an enclosed compartment, an open storage bin, with a pair of superb cup holders forward of the shifter. The emergency brake lever is located there. Pockets in the front doors and behind the front seats are provided, but we'd like more places to put stuff in the center console area. Three power outlets are provided in the center stack, though unfortunately none have power when the ignition is switched off. Behind the rear seat is a small hidden compartment under the floor, a cargo net (on slt), and another power outlet. Rear-seat headrests conveniently flip down to give the driver a better view to the rear.  slt's overhead console includes a sunglasses holder, homelink universal transmitter and an optional travelnote digital recorder 85), which allows the driver to verbally record phone numbers while on a cell phone. All envoy audio systems include rds (radio data systems) technology, allowing the listener to search for stations by type, display song and artist information, and provide traffic and weather updates.  onstar, gm's telematics system, is optional on all models and we recommend it both for its safety and convenience features. Onstar includes hands-free cell phone communication, automatic crash reporting (set the airbags off and they'll. 2008 gmc acadia review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Eight-passenger capability with better fuel economy. introductionthe gmc acadia may be a harbinger of refined, fuel-efficient vehicles that offer the utility of a big suv. The acadia is a crossover suv, meaning it looks like a truck but it's built like a car. Crossovers have been gaining in popularity because they make so much sense for so many families, but what sets the acadia apart is its size: it's big, similar in size to the gmc yukon and chevy tahoe, inside and out. And it can carry a lot of cargo. For starters, it's big and roomy. The driver sits high off the ground and benefits from that commanding view down the road that many like. Features like rear-seat dvd entertainment make it a good choice for families.  the only places where the acadia falls short of truck-based suvs is in heavy-duty towing or for slogging through military-grade muck. Properly equipped, the gmc acadia can tow 4,500 pound, while a yukon is rated to pull 7,500 pounds or more. Based on the silverado pickup, the yukon can handle rugged terrain. It absorbs rough pavement in a soothing manner and takes corners reassuringly for such a large vehicle. It handles better and is smoother than a yukon and other truck-based suvs. Gmc's 275-horsepower 3. 6-liter v6 is smooth and sophisticated and supplies good acceleration performance. Its six-speed automatic transmission is responsive, smooth and efficient, further aiding fuel economy.  three rows of seats provide room for seven or eight, though it's more comfortable with six. Two adults and two or three children plus their belongings can be carried with ease. Acadia comes loaded with safety equipment, including curtain air bags that provide head protection and side-impact airbags that provide torso protection; electronic stability control and other active safety features can help the driver avoid accidents.  for 2008, acadia comes standard with brake assist, which helps the driver apply full braking performance in a panic stop. A rearview camera now comes with the optional navigation system, and we recommend it highly to help the driver avoid a tragic accident when backing up. Improvements to the all-wheel-drive and traction-control systems enhance and refine their performance for 2008. Xm satellite radio comes standard on the 2008 acadia. A second-row center console has been added to seven-seat models, there are new metallic colors, and other equipment added for 2008. lineupthe 2008 gmc acadia comes in basic sle and up-level slt trim. Tires are 255/65 on 18-inch painted aluminum wheels. Options for sle include bose stereo 870), second-row captain's chairs and console 495), and other equipment from the higher-line model. Eight-passenger seating is available for a credit (-$495). Dvd entertainment is offered as a stand-alone option 1,295). Brake assist has been added for 2008.  air curtains are low-pressure air bags that come down from the ceiling and cover the side windows (of all three rows on the acadia) to provide head protection in a side-impact crash or rollover; in a rollover the air curtains could also help keep arms and heads inside the vehicle. Studies by the insurance institute for highway safety (iihs), which is funded by the insurance industry, have shown such head protection greatly improves the chance of surviving a side-impact crash. However, air curtains are not a substitute for seat belts. The front-seat side-impact air bags provide torso protection in a side-impact crash. Iihs studies have also shown these, too, are valuable, but not as important as head protection.  onstar uses a global positioning system and an extra powerful cellular telephone to put the driver in touch with the onstar center which is manned 24/7. The center can tell where the vehicle is located and send help or provide other assistance. Should the air bags deploy the system can automatically notify the onstar center that an accident has occurred and where the vehicle is located so it can then send help. Onstar service is free for the first year but after that requires a subscription fee. walkaroundat 201 inches overall, the gmc acadia is a foot longer than a honda pilot and almost 8 inches longer than a ford explorer. The gmc acadia shares basic mechanical components with the buick enclave and saturn outlook.  the exterior design team for the gmc acadia managed to give a relatively large vehicle a look that has moved away from bulky without sacrificing a kind of active grace. Happily gmc has avoided the threatening-suv school of design that has been so popular.  the rounded front end features a bight grille surround framing a prominent gmc emblem. Distinctively curved headlight clusters give the acadia a slightly startled expression. Projector beams are standard; high-intensity discharge (hid) head lights are optional. Small round fog lights nestle below. The front bumper is massive, but this is camouflaged somewhat by its black color and by a bright strip at the top.  most noticeable from the side are rounded fender flares and a horizontal character line that sets out to connect them but disappears into the doors instead. Tasteful bright trim and polished aluminum roof rails add visual interest. The shape of the acadia is aerodynamically efficient (for an suv), with a drag coefficient of 0. 344. Heated, power-adjustable outside mirrors are standard on all models. Body-color outside mirrors with integrated turn signals are standard on slt; power-folding mirrors with integrated turn signals and auto-dimming come with the slt-2 package.  the rear view is generic suv/crossover accented by interesting two-tone taillight clusters and quad exhaust tips.  eighteen-inch wheels and tires are standard, and 19-inch wheels are available. General motors has acknowledged the interiors of many gm vehicles needed to be upgraded, and the acadia engineers banished cheap-looking plastic and bargain-basement cloth. Their effort shows in the acadia.  they did not lose track of basic functionality, however. The heating and cooling controls are easy to find and use. The instruments are legible, not lost in some fussy attempt at a complex design.  big cupholders and a deep bin between the front seats are a plus, but the pockets on the inside door panels are too narrow for any meaningful storage.  the front seats are wide and comfortable. The steering wheel tilts and telescopes, making it easy for drivers tall and short to get comfortable. As with any suv, the driver sits high, with a good view down the road. But visibility to the rear isn't great, requiring care when backing up. We recommend opting for ultrasonic rear park assist, which can detect objects out of the driver's line of sight. We further recommend getting the rearview camera, which comes with the navigation system.  the 2008 acadia sle comes standard with eight-passenger seating; a 60/40 split bench in the second row accommodates three people. The up-level slt models come standard with second-row captain's chairs; they cut passenger capacity to seven but are more comfortable. Either model can be ordered with the other seating arrangement, however, for extra cost on the sle or a credit on the slt. 2007 gmc acadia review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new crossover big, polished and comfortable. introductionthe all-new gmc acadia may look like a sport utility vehicle, but this is one of those cases in which looks deceive. The acadia has many of the capabilities of an suv but it is aimed at people who want better ride and handling.  the acadia is what the auto industry calls a 'crossover,' which means despite its looks it uses car-type construction and mechanical components instead of the trucky parts used in traditional suvs.  acadia shares those components with its siblings, the 2007 saturn outlook and the 2008 buick enclave.  head down a curved, country road and it is easy to see gmc achieved its goals with the acadia. It eases over rough pavement in a soothing manner but takes corners in a reassuring fashion, although the driver is always aware that this is a relatively large and heavy vehicle.  meanwhile, a sophisticated 275-hp 3. 6-liter v6 provide smooth and readily available acceleration and a new six-speed automatic transmission helps fuel economy.  in addition, all acadias come loaded with standard safety equipment including proven lifesavers such as electronic stability control and air bags that provide head protection in a side-impact crash.  three rows of seats provide room for seven or eight, although that assumes an extremely chummy trip. Where it falls behind a classic suv is in towing capacity or the ability to handle a serious, off-road chore. But for most people that won't matter a bit. For most people, the acadia is an interesting and attractive alternative. lineupthe 2007 gmc acadia comes in three trim levels, starting with the sle followed by the slt1 and slt2. All-wheel drive is available for more secure grip in foul weather.  air curtains are low-pressure air bags that come down from the ceiling and cover the side windows (of all three rows) to provide head protection in a side-impact crash or rollover; in a rollover the air curtains could help keep arms and heads inside the vehicle in addition to providing head protection. However, air curtains are not a substitute for seat belts. Studies by the insurance institute for highway safety, which is funded by the insurance industry, have shown such head protection greatly improves the chance of surviving a side-impact crash. The front-seat side-impact airbags provide chest protection in a side-impact crash. Institute studies have also shown these 'torso bags' are valuable, but not as valuable as head protection.  onstar uses a global positioning system and an extra powerful cellular telephone to put the driver in touch with the onstar center which is manned 24/7. The center can tell where the vehicle is located and send help or provide other assistance. Should the air bags deploy the system can automatically notify the onstar center of an accident and where the vehicle is located so it can then send help. Initially onstar help is free but eventually there are subscription charges. walkaroundthe exterior design team for the gmc acadia managed to give a relatively large vehicle a look that has moved away from bulky without sacrificing a kind of active grace. Happily gmc has avoided the threatening-suv school of design that seems so popular with some manufacturers.  with an overall length of about 201 inches the acadia is slightly longer than two major competitors, the honda pilot and ford explorer. interiora few years ago general motors officials acknowledged (not like they had a choice) that the interiors of many of its vehicles need to be upgraded, banishing cheap-looking plastic and bargain-basement cloth.  that effort shows in the acadia. Indeed, the interior had a handsome and upscale look in the fancy slt2 model we drove.  meanwhile, gm did not lose track of basic functionality. The heating and cooling controls are easy to find and use. The instruments are legible, not lost in some fussy attempt at a complex design.  big cupholders and a deep bin between the front seats are a plus but the storage pockets on the side doors are too narrow for any meaningful storage.  the front seats are wide and comfortable and a tilt and telescoping steering wheel makes it easy for drivers tall and short to get comfortable. As with an suv the driver sits high with a good look down the road. But visibility to the rear isn't great, requiring care when backing up. An optional feature to ease that problem is an ultrasonic rear park assist system that can detect objects out of the driver's line of sight.  the standard seating arrangement is for seven, which includes two captain's chairs in the second row (with three people in the third row and two in the front seats). Those who want eight-passenger capacity get a split, bench seat for the second row that accommodates three.  gm says the second row has a maximum of 36. 9 inches of leg room, which is comparable to the pilot and explorer. With the second row in the rearward-most position a six-foot adult can be comfortable in the driver's seat and another six-foot adult can be seated directly behind without being cramped.  getting to the third row involves using what gm calls a smart slide feature. It is a handle that is designed to move the second row up and out of the way.  on the model we tried, which was an early acadia built by gm for testing and not quite ready for sale to the public, the handle was balky. A gm spokeswoman said that problem will be solved on the models headed to dealerships in december. Nevertheless, it would be a good thing to check at the dealership before making a purchase.  as in most vehicles the third row is best suited for small children. But here is the fine print when gmc says the acadia is a seven or eight-passenger vehicle: gm assumes three people are sitting in the third row which has about nine inches less hip room than the second row. Putting three people back there will be a tight fit even for small children.  the acadia really triumphs in cargo capacity, according to manufacturers' measurements. It has almost 20 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, more than the trunk space of a mid-size sedan. That compares to almost 16 cubic feet for the pilot and almost 14 cubic feet for the explorer. (typically automakers make those calculations filling the space to the roof, blocking the rearward view.) a small plastic-lined bin below the floor of the acadia's cargo compartment is perfect for carrying messy stuff.  the third row folds down easily and a strap is used to pull it back up. It is not an upper-body workout but does require some effort. With that third row folded down the acadia's cargo-carrying advantage continues with almost 69 cubic feet of space. That compares to about 44 cubic feet for the explorer and almost 48 cubic feet for the pilot. One nice feature is that lowering the second or third rows on the acadia does not require removing the head restraints. So, it quickly gives the driver a feeling of confidence about where the vehicle is heading and how it will respond.  the acadia uses an independent suspension in the front and rear, just like most cars. It provides a well-rounded blend of ride and handling.  bumps, tar strips and potholes are still felt but only distantly, without the slam-bam jarring that is part of life with a truck-based suv. The body also feels strong and doesn't quiver with each blow. But despite the pleasing ride the body motions are still nicely controlled so there isn't a sloppy feeling.  there is no denying that the acadia is a relatively large and quite heavy vehicle, with the curb weight of the all-wheel drive model we tested being almost 5,000 pounds. That is several hundred pounds more than a ford explorer v8 and about 500 pounds more than a honda pilot.  but the acadia still heads into a turn fairly quickly and feels locked-down stable during interstate cruising.  in the past many gm trucks had a soft, squishy feel to the brake pedal. That is not the case with the acadia. It feels firm makes it equally easy to shave off a lot or a little speed.  the best safety feature is the ability to avoid accidents, which in the acadia's case is helped by stabilitrak, gm's brand name for electronic stability control.
